NAC Match Report Gt Yarmouth North 23rd May 2022

Nathan takes Gt Yarmouth North beach with a 92cm Smooth hound

The afternoon Gus Report showed a gin clear sea, no weed, weather excellent 14:04pm with the comment (clever dog!) “Like a mill pond, see what happens later” so I guess expectations were high as each angler prepared their tackle at home ready for a trip to Gt Yarmouth North Beach. Little did we know, by the time we gathered the squalls had arrived, and everything became a little soggy to say the least.

We welcomed new members Gary and Mel Alexander  who arrived in the middle of a really heavy squall, with little time for introductions and welcome. Nathan volunteered his services to show them the ropes. With the board walk providing direct access to the beach, we pegged either side of the board walk hopefully reducing walking distance for all. So, in the tail end of the squall, we prepared to cast off at 6:45pm, fishing to length with hopefully a few doggies over 38cm or smooth hounds over 51cm making an appearance.

As the squall subsided, everyone made their initial casts, immediately finding that the tide was taking the trace and when that trace was retrieved it was very vegetarian (lots of weed). The “GusOmeter” was wrong cloudy/weedy/strong tide. Then weather began to lift, and we could see the wind farm and quite an impressive rainbow – see photograph.  The older hands mooted that fish would appear once the tide had ebbed further. And so, it happened fish started to appear, and the weed started to drop off.

Target for the night was hopefully Dog Fish and Smooth Hounds, and as the tide ebbed the first doggies started to be caught with a few sizeable Smooth Hounds. By the end of the night 107 fish of size caught and average of 6 fish per angler with no one blanking – well done Gary & Mel (pegs 2 & 3) on your first match. In summary we picked up 20 Dog Fish of various sizes, 2 Smooth Hounds, 80 Whiting – some of a decent size 35cm plus fell to John Harvey. But the biggest Smooth Hound of the night went to Nathan (peg 1) with a 92 cm specimen, just pipping Jamie Childerhouse with an 82 cm on his last cast (peg 20). A special mention to Michael Craske in picking up a 26cm Dab.

A fine night’s fishing (in the end) was spoiled by a cloud burst as everyone was packing up and results were being compiled, so well done all who fished and fought their way through the weed, and finally the rain. See you all next week at Salthouse, lets hope the weather behaves itself.

NAC Match 15 Kelling 16th May 2022

NAC Match Report Kelling 16th May 2022

John Harvey takes Kelling, but Cain nearly gets a clean sweep

With Smooth Hounds and Bass making an appearance at the Bass Festival 14 – 15th May, it was an excited 19 anglers who turned up at Weybourne for tonight’s match. But so had half of Norfolk decided to take advantage of a beautiful evening and so mess up our opportunity to get 19 pegs on the beach without walking all the way to Kelling. So, without further to do venue was quickly changed to Kelling via the Collection. We were joined by Alin Hantig and Michael Craske for their first match, and Max Goodchild returning for his second match, welcome guys hope you enjoy the evening. With the tide peaking at 19:27pm and the last minute switch of venue we decided to kick off at 7:00pm. Pegging either side of the car park path the stage was set……..see photo of the sunset.

As soon as lines were in the water the bites started coming with Andrew Turk (peg 19) and Simon Bottomley (peg 18) picking up Pouting, quickly followed by Hounds arriving (to certain pegs!). But the highlight of this initial flurry of activity was a magnificent Bass caught be Richard Craske (peg 16) –  see photo. Weighing in at an impressive 65cm, 260 weight points (5lb 7/16oz) 6.5lb on the scales. This was quickly followed by John Harvey (peg 17) picking up 76cm Smooth Hound. The Hounds kept coming with Cain Plumb (peg 8) picking up the biggest Hound of the night with a magnificent 88cm specimen, just pipping another Hound from John Harvey of 86cm. With his usual consistent catch record Nathan Drewery picked up 3 hounds between 51 – 76 cm. In summary 12 Smooth Hounds caught (see summary), congratulations also to Ian and Jamie Childerhouse (family hounds pegs 2 & 10) and Eamon Finch (1). Also well done to Michael Craske who opens his NAC account with an impressive 59cm Dog. Woof woof all. !

The lasting impression of the night goes to Richard Craske with his Bass, who’s photo makes him the new poster boy for NAC. It’s a sorry state of affairs that even with such an impressive fish that he did not get even a Top 3 position, managing 4th. Well done John Harvey for an excellent result, clearly showing how its done. Whilst last week’s winner Cain Plumb on his favourite beach ( Ha Ha ) picked up a decent 2nd position, but picking up biggest flat/round at the same time, and not forgetting lucky peg…..nearly, but not quite a clean sweep. It’s starting to become quite a tussle in the last matches of the league between John/Nathan/Cain and not forgetting Ian Childerhouse and John Spalton. However, John Harvey’s 1st place does come with some reward, the NAC Eamon Finch Monday night trophy (see photo) ……which he’s allowed to keep for 1 week ! (thanks Eamon) …..so who will win in next week ?

Match Result:

1st          John Harvey                                  peg 17                11 fish                             896 weight points (18bs 11/16oz)

2nd         Cain Plumb                                    peg 8                  3 fish                               424 weight points (8lbs 13/16oz)

3rd         Nathan Drewery                          peg 14                3 fish                               314 weight points (6lbs 9/16oz)

4th         Richard Craske                             peg 16                2 fish                                284 weight Points (5lbs 15/16oz)

NAC Match 14 Summer League Gt. Yarmouth (South Beach) 9th May 2022

NAC Match Report Gt Yarmouth (South Beach) 9th May 2022

Cain signals his return to NAC fishing with an impressive match win at Gt Yarmouth.

Great Yarmouth as a venue is a bit like marmite, you either love it or hate it, whilst it has been known to throw up big catches it can be snaggy and is very dependent on your peg. So it was with some trepidation that the pegs were drawn with the “short walkers” taking pegs close to the Travel Inn beach passage way with the lower numbered pegs towards the pleasure beach. Numbers fishing at Great Yarmouth can be a bit erratic so it was great to see 14 anglers booked in and fishing the venue, especially with the price of fuel! A special welcome back to the NAC of Norfolk’s own star rod builder Cain Plumb.

With everyone ready to hit the beach early we called a 6:30pm start as with an ebbing tide (LT 22:23pm) we wanted to take advantage of the deeper water. As usual fishing to size – see species and number of fish and their size limits chart. Tide was pulling towards the pleasure beach end with the southerly wind adding to conditions. The big hitters (casting) started to pick up good size whiting 30+cm and started to put fish on their cards, and with some early Dog Fish and Smooth Hounds it was looking to be one of those nights. It was clear early on that the action was at either ends of the beach, see catch summary/peg chart.

In total 111 fish caught, giving an average of 8 fish/angler, with 6 separate species caught. Despite the lateness in the year, we are still seeing sizeable whiting carded. In total 94 caught and carded, the biggest of 35cm being carded by John Spalton (peg 2). Along with the whiting, 3 Dabs, 5 Dog Fish, 7 Smooth Hounds of which a 92cm specimen caught by Cain Plumb (peg 13) picking up biggest round of the night, 1 Ray and a 30cm Flounder, giving John Harvey (peg 4) biggest flat fish of the night. The best fish photo of the night goes to Roger Cunnington’s under sized ray.

But the story of the night goes to the winning return of Cain Plumb (peg 13) to NAC Monday night fishing, whilst only catching 5 fish he amassed 1028 weight points (21lb 7/16oz). Clearly sizes matter !. 2nd place fell to Roger Cunnington (peg 3) who picked up 484 weight points, and was unlucky with his ray. Whilst 3rd place fell to John Spalton (peg 2)  with 400 weight points helped by some impressive size whiting, that helped his bad back. A cracking nights fish with no one blanking and an average of 8 fish per angler. But the results speak for themselves…..well done Cain.

Match Result:

1st          Cain Plumb                                    peg 13                5 fish                               1028 weight points (21bs 7/16oz)

2nd         Roger Cunnington                        peg 3                  15 fish                             484 weight points (10lbs 1/16oz)

3rd         John Spalton                                 peg 2                   14 fish                             400 weight points (8lbs 5/160z)

Match average                                                        8 (was 6 fish last week) / angler

Biggest round                 93cm Smooth Hound     Cain Plumb (peg 13)

Biggest Flat                     30cm Flounder               John Harvey (peg 4)

Lucky peg                        Ian Childerhouse (peg 11)

NAC Summer League Match Bacton 2nd May 2022

NAC Match Report Bacton 2nd May 2022

John Harvey bags up at Bacton, stopping Nathan picking up a match treble.

After last week’s disappointing fish show at Cart Gap last week there was optimism in the air for the Bank Holiday Bacton match. With the early afternoon weather report from Gus looking favourable, fingers or paws crossed, it was looking good. As expected, a lot of anglers turned up early so the pressure was on for an early start. 17 anglers assembled for the match (missed Steve Medlar due to COVID) with Max Goodchild joining us for his first match, welcome aboard. Just a reminder that match numbers are confirmed Monday am by match admin, so please flag “going” on Facebook by Sunday night. We need to know names and numbers for angling insurance purposes. Pegs were drawn promptly at 6:00pm followed by a stampede to hit the beach. As there was a number of pleasure anglers on the beach we pegged towards the gas terminal.

As usual we were fishing to size and with a flood tide (HT 20:24) we all cast in hope that last week’s poor showing wasn’t on the cards. As the tide started to come in the early signs were good with some decent Whiting for the long casters, followed by a show of dog fish, and a Smooth Hound. The fish continued to be carded with Nathan fishing on peg 6 picking up the biggest flat 28cm Dab and he biggest round of 60cm for a Dog fish. In total 97 fish caught, no blanks with a fish/angler ration of 6 fish …….6 times more than last week at Cart Gap. Must have been all those extra orders of crabs/rag worm from Dene !. Look out for AJ’s photos later on Facebook……..seems to have spent the night taking photos instead of dangling …….hopefully they’ve all caught our better fish and casting actions

Match winner was John Harvey (peg 9) with a 14 fish to his card including a 55cm Smooth Hound, and total weight points of 280. Just pipping Nathan Drewery (peg 6) by 4 weight points (276) 1/16th of an oz and stopping him getting the match treble, with Marc Lawson (peg 4) picking up 3rd position with 252 weight points (peg 4) including 3 dog fish.

Match Result:
