NAC Match Report Overstrand 14th September 2020

The weather set fine to make it an enjoyable night on the beach. Gathering in Overstrand car park in the late summer sunshine there was an air of anticipation as to whether it was going to be one of those special evenings with everyone catching. The tide was in and would be dropping as we hit the beach, so the debate was which side of the promenade to fish. Decided to fish from the end of the prom towards Cromer.

With new government guidelines (see Angling Trust information) members socially distanced whilst checking in, paying fees etc. A COVID-19 Risk Assessment for NAC Members has been developed and a copy will be placed on the Facebook and NAC websites. Members are requested to support application of the risk assessment by booking in (supports track & trace), having exact monies and socially distancing (supports reducing contamination risk).

The club welcomed Harvey Edwards who was joining the match under the careful mentorship of John Catchpole. Also, Val Read and Josh Harper who seem to have picked up the sea fishing bug, came along to check us out with the view of joining later. So, with introductions over, a cohort of 15 fishers fell down the cliff to the beach (looking forward to climbing back after the match). Whilst no Pegs laid out, a simple ‘walk off’ in order made sure we achieved social distancing.

Tide was up to the groynes, so all set up carefully, Peter Simmonds on his return to the league, took an early bath before kick-off due a freak wave drowning his bait and gear. No doubt will dry out in time for next week. Early fishing set the trend for the evening, not a lot of movement on the water, and fortunately not a lot of weed. Then the news we were all waiting for, the first fish. A 24cm Bass caught by newcomer Harvey Edwards, must have been John’s mentoring skills. A great start for Harvey’s sea fishing career. (see photo). But the night progressed with low numbers of fish caught. Nice night, a shame no one told the fish.

So, the 2nd venue of the Winter League generated a small haul of fish. In total a total of 12 fish caught (9 1/2lb weight, 437 weight points). Highlight of the night was Ian Childerhouse (Peg 18) with a 56cm Bass. Largest flat was a 28cm Flounder caught by Nathan Drewery (Peg 15). Leon Smith (Peg 14) continued his personal ‘cod run’ with a 23cm Codling

Match Result:

Podium spot went to Ian Childerhouse (Peg 18) who caught 2 fish (including that magnificent Bass) for 174 weight points, No 2 position to John Spalton (Peg 1) with 3 fish with 112 weight points. No 3 spot went to Nathan Drewery (Peg 15) 2 fish 54 weight points.

A good night especially for Harvey (24cm Bass) who is now on track to become the next Ian Childerhouse (56cm Bass) just another 32 cm to go.
