NAC Report 10/4/17 Kelling

After an excellent weekend of fishing at the Norfolk Sea Angling Festival, we were not expecting a great turnout as lots of our members had fished hard and assisted in the running of the competition, however everyone was surprised and happy with 18 of us fishing including a return to the fold of Pete Durkin, so we hit the shingle at Kelling on a lovely evening, with a slightly chopped up sea, expectations were as always high for this most productive & consistent venue, pegging was left and right of the carpark, with confirmed reports of a good sized ray at Weybourne on Sunday evening and of course the dogfish that seem to be prevalent this time of year these days. Would the chopped-up sea put the chance of a ray off and more importantly would the bass make an appearance.

Onto the report, Kelling is renowned for being a bit peggy now and again, with the shouts of “if you’re not on the fish you won’t get em” ringing in our ears each time we fish here, caliber of angler plays no part, if you find a gulley with fish in it you will do well and the person either side may well struggle.
Loads of undersized fish were being seen all along the match stretch including plenty of schoolie bass, and some were becoming increasingly frustrated, a shout from end peg but one from Kimberley Lawn bagging her first dogfish closely followed by a second on her next cast, boosted hope for everyone, then it seemed all hell broke loose and dogs were coming out, all along the match stretch, along with some good pouting and the odd good dab and whiting. Robert Durrant added to his first ever dogfish from last week with a brace of them this week, even Adrian Bordianu managed to find one again after they eluded him all weekend, along with several others, but it was Charlie Needham who had the “hot spot” to himself, with seasoned anglers either side of him struggling to find the fish, Charlie took top spot with a cracking score of 9 fish for 10lb 13 2/3oz, including 5 dogfish which certainly made up for his disastrous weekend fishing, second podium spot went to Dene Conway with 4 fish for 4lb 12oz including 2 dogs and the biggest of the evening at 67cm, third spot and hopefully getting her mojo back was Kimberley Lawn with 7 fish for 4lb 4oz, heaviest flat of the night went to Russell Taylor with a nice 29cm dab.

All in all, 64 sizeable fish were caught including 18 dogfish enough for one each in retrospect, for a total weight of 45lb 12 1/3oz, with reports now also coming in of smoothound pups on the sand to crab baits seems like the season has well and truly kicked off, next week’s match is at Mundesley, please make sure to book in early as it is Easter Weekend and bait will be flying out the door so get it ordered quickly. The shop will have rag, lug, fresh blacks, maddies and fresh peeler crab, will confirm later in week if we have yellowtails.
